2025 BYD Atto 3 update revealed in China by regulator

BYD has presented images of the 2025 Atto 3 (known as Yuan Plus in China) to the Chinese regulatory body. The photographs showcased changes to the exterior and included a camera in the front fender, indicating enhanced ADAS (advanced driver-assistance system) features.

The new Atto 3 now features a redesigned front bumper, giving it a more aggressive appearance. The grille and headlights have not undergone any modifications. These images were sent to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) as part of car modifications, where only upgraded versions of existing models are approved, with the powertrain and most specifications remaining unchanged.

The rear bumper has also been redesigned to align with the new front design language. The roof spoiler has been updated to include two third brake lights instead of the single light strip found in the earlier model.

New roof pillars can be seen on top, along with decorative silver stripes along the lower edge visible from the side.

A new camera positioned in the front bumper suggests that BYD has improved its assisted driving technologies. In April, BYD announced a partnership with drone manufacturer DJI as one of its ADAS suppliers.

The dimensions for the vehicle are 4455 mm in length, 1875 mm in width, and 1615 mm in height, with a wheelbase measuring 2720 mm. The electric SUV features a 150 kW motor model TZ200XSQ. There are two battery options available: 49.92 kWh and 60.48 kWh, which provide ranges of 430 km and 510 km under the CLTC testing cycle, respectively.

The price range for the current version of the BYD Atto 3 is between 116,800 and 144,800 yuan (approximately USD 15,930 – 19,750) in China. Although a launch date has not been announced, listings with MIIT typically indicate that the car is nearing the start of trial production. CarNewsChina anticipates a release in the second quarter of 2025.

BYD has revised its lineup for the 2025 Atto 3, reducing prices and adjusting features in response to the rapidly changing EV market in Australia.

As previously mentioned, the Standard model from last year has been replaced with the Essential, lowering the starting price of BYD’s electric SUV from $44,990 (excluding on-road costs) to $39,990.

The top-tier Premium model, which continues from last year, has also seen a price reduction of $2509 and now occupies the former price position of the Standard at $44,990.

This adjustment widens the gap between the BYD Atto 3 and competing models like the XPeng G6 (starting at $54,800) and Chery Omoda E5 (starting at $42,990), as well as the Hyundai Kona Electric (starting at $54,000) and Renault Megane E-Tech (starting at $54,990).

Despite the price cuts for the Atto 3, both variants still come with a single electric motor that delivers 150 kW of power and 310 Nm of torque to the front wheels.

Interestingly, BYD claims the Essential has a slower 0-100 km/h acceleration time compared to the Premium (7.9 seconds versus 7.3 seconds), even though the former is lighter (1680 kg vs. 1750 kg).

The Essential and Premium models also differ in battery size, with the more budget-friendly Atto 3 featuring a 49.92 kWh battery and the high-end version equipped with a 60.48 kWh battery.

This results in the Essential having a WLTP-rated driving range of 345 km, while the Premium offers a range of 420 km before requiring a recharge.

The flagship Atto 3 benefits from quicker maximum charging capabilities, able to accept 88 kW through its CCS 2 DC charging port, compared to the Essential’s peak of 70 kW. Regardless, both variants come with vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality.

The 2025 Atto 3 has also seen an increase in its maximum unbraked towing capacity by 50 kg, bringing it to a total of 750 kg, while the braked towing capacity remains unchanged at 750 kg.

Standard features include 17-inch alloy wheels, heated and power-adjustable side mirrors, a 5.0-inch digital instrument cluster, synthetic leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, keyless entry, and push-button ignition.

New for 2025 are LED headlights, along with Bluetooth and digital key capabilities

However, upgrading to the Premium trim includes features such as a panoramic sunroof, powered tailgate, roof rails, power-folding side mirrors, heated front seats, music-synchronized ambient lighting, a wireless smartphone charger, and the option for Surf Blue exterior paint.

Furthermore, it replaces the Essential’s 12.8-inch rotating infotainment display with a larger 15.6-inch touchscreen unit that supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

In terms of safety, the 2025 Atto 3 is equipped with features such as forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking (AEB), blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and additional safety technologies.
